BENEFITS OF
COMBAT ARTS

As a previous instructor at St. Martins’s Academy of Medieval Arts, I had the privilege of training under Bob Charron, whose insights into Fiore dei Liberi’s Fior di Battaglia laid a solid foundation for my own teaching. The Fior di Battaglia provides a comprehensive guide, starting with wrestling, which is crucial for understanding balance and body mechanics in combat. From there, we progress through various disciplines like dagger, one-handed sword, and longsword, adapting each lesson to meet the unique needs and interests of every student.

My Teaching Philosophy

I believe that every student comes to martial arts with their own goals—be it self-defense, historical curiosity, or physical fitness. This is why I customize the curriculum based on individual desires and capabilities. In our first class, I take time to assess not only their skill level but also what they hope to achieve. This personalized approach helps create a more engaging and effective learning experience.

Curriculum Highlights

  1. Wrestling (Abrazare): We start here to build a strong foundation in grappling and striking principles. This sets the stage for everything that follows.
  2. Dagger Techniques: Next, we explore close-quarter combat with the dagger. This is where students learn the importance of speed, precision, and deception.
  3. One-Handed and Longsword: As students become more comfortable, we dive into the intricacies of swordplay. I encourage them to experiment with different techniques, developing their own style.
  4. Integration of German Techniques: I’ve also incorporated elements from German fencing manuals. This cross-training enriches our practice and gives students a broader perspective on historical martial arts.

Assessment and Progress

Regular feedback is vital. I check in with students frequently to discuss their progress and adjust our focus as needed. Whether they want to master a specific principle or build confidence in sparring, I’m here to guide them.

Ultimately, my aim is to create a supportive environment where students can thrive and explore the rich history of medieval martial arts. I’m passionate about helping them develop their skills and confidence, ensuring they leave each session feeling accomplished.
